Install Yoast SEO Plugin

To extend the Ranking Capabilities of WordPress, we need to install SEO Plugin. We will suggest you to use Yoast SEO Plugin which is available for free in WordPress Repository. It can be used to optimize your WordPress blog’s SEO to a great extent. We are going to discuss settings and use of this plugin further in this post.

Configure Robots.txt

Robots.txt plays a great role in search engine ranking. It is like a rulebook to the search engines. It must be optimised in such a way that your blog gets the most benefit from it. Robots.txt helps search engine bots to direct which part to crawl and which part to avoid. Robots.txt file is located at

By default WordPress contains a virtual Robots.txt file. You can modify robots.txt using various plugins but here we are going for Yoast SEO Plugin.

  1. Go to WordPress Dashboard -> SEO -> Edit Files.
  2. Paste the recommended robots.txt file and click save changes to Robots.txt.

Noindex & Deindex Category, Tags, Author Archives, Date Archives

According to recent Panda Updates the quality content is must. But pages like Categories, Tags, Author archives and date archives are not quality content and may lead to a penalty by google. So to overcome this we can set this set of pages to noindex so that it is not indexed by search engines. Here again we are going to use Yoast SEO Plugin :

  1. Go to WordPress Dashboard -> SEO -> Titles & Metas.
  2. In general tab we recommend you to tick all boxes except use meta keyword tag.
  3. Now go to Post Types tab. Select noindex, follow for all types other that post and pages.
  4. Now go to Taxonomies tab. Select noindex, follow for categories and tags.
  5. Now go to Other tab. Select noindex, follow for author archives and date based archives. (PS: You can also disable both archives if you want)

So we have successfully set these pages to noindex. But it may take time to deindex from Google.  So now we are going to manually deindex author archives, categories, tags from Google. I will suggest you to deindex following directories :
  1. Login to Google Webmaster Tools.
  2. Go to your website’s dashboard.
  3. Go to Google Index -> Remove URLs.

Link your Social Profiles to WordPress

Linking your social profile may help a little to boost SEO for your blog. Though we can’t confirm it, but it is better to link it. Again here we are going to use Yoast SEO plugin :

Fix Replytocom duplicate content issue

So first of all let’s discuss about what are replytocom urls. These are for the blogs which allows reply to comments. It’s URL looks like and this URL shows the same post. So more are the number of replies to the comment, more number of this URL are present. This can also lead to Google Penalty. So here we can fix it completely with the help of three simple and effective steps :

  1. Go to WordPress Dashboard -> SEO -> Permalinks.
  2. Tick Remove ?replytocom variables and click save changes.

– Fixing by Webmaster tools – URL Paramaters

  1. Go to Webmaster tools & go to your site’s dashboard.
  2. Go to Crawl -> URL Parameters.
  3. There you will see replytocom under parameters column.(If not then click add parameter)
  4. Change the setting as given in below screenshot.

– Manually removing URLs from Google

  1. Go to Google. Type inurl:replytocom

  4. Now you have list of all replytocom URLs indexed by google.
  5. Go to Webmaster tools & go to your site’s dashboard.
  6. Go to Google Index -> Remove URLs.

  9. Select remove page from search result and cache and click Submit Request and do same for all URLs.
